I have been asked what "Boricua" means and how it is pronounced. Long before Spain conquered Puerto Rico, indigenous Taino people called the island Boriken. According to the International Pronunciation Association (IPA), it is pronounced /bo'ɾi.kwa/.
"Yo soy boricua" is a way of saying, "I am of Puerto Rican decent." It is said to show pride in being Puerto Rican.
